"Spencer is one of the most gifted, tasteful, genuine and professional musicians I know. He is disciplined, dependable, artistic, and he knows his instrument. He also works well with others to write and arrange parts. He has a gift for understanding the vision of a song and creating the perfect feel for it. I recommend him with complete confidence."
- Amy Winkles, Songwriter & Worship Leader
My name is Spencer, and I moved to Nashville, TN in the summer of 2012. I earned a degree in Music Performance from the University of Georgia, having studied under such respected teachers as Dr. Thomas McCutchen, Dr. Arvin Scott, Steve Dancz and Timothy Adams, Jr. Since graduating, I have toured with numerous acts around the southeast, including Connor Pledger and PhoenixDrive, as well as drumming in many strategic partners of North Point Community Church. I am also capable in the studio, comfortably recording along with a metronome or tracks at any tempo. If you are a serious artist looking for a solid drummer, I look forward to meeting and working with you!
As a drummer, my musical philosophy consists of playing for the support and betterment of every song. With that in mind, I practice and maintain the ability to play with speed & precision, but often I find that simple, steady grooves will serve the song best. In this vein, a few of my biggest influences are Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd, Jeff Hamilton, Jason McGerr, Stan Lynch, Ben Sesar, Ronnie Vannucci, Ringo Starr, Benny Benjamin and Al Jackson, Jr. Like most of these drummers, I am content playing music of any kind for a living, but my goal is to become a respected session musician, playing on many different albums, touring with various acts and continually stretching myself as a player.
For those of you seeking a capable drum teacher, look no further. Not only did I take years of private lessons in school, but I have extensive experience teaching all styles of drumset - jazz, latin, afro-cuban, blues, R&B, hip hop, funk and rock - as well as many other types of percussion. More importantly, I consider myself a personable instructor who quickly adapts to each student's skill level and personality. I prefer to teach from the comfort of my own home, but I am happy to travel to my students' locations (although that does add another variable in cost). For lesson pricing or other details, please contact me via phone or e-mail.
As a final note, I am a focused musician, and I love experiencing all the glorious aspects of music. I practice, write, arrange and play for the satisfaction of putting forth the best performance possible, but I am not in this industry to abuse substances or party excessively. In no way would I prohibit someone else from doing as they please (assuming it doesn't compromise the music), but please remain aware that I will refrain from these elements myself. That being said, my values don't prevent me from having a good time and making great music, so I look forward to exploring new horizons with new friends in the future!
